Project Thom is a collaboration between the Humaneity Foundation and Healthcare Expeditions International. A team of 18 students, most of them from NUS Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Dentistry made a trip down to Aknuwat School to kick-start a long term Health Education Program.
In the 4 days spent teaching at the school, the team covered 3 topics: Personal Hygiene, First Aid and Accident Prevention, and Dental/Oral Hygiene. Personal Hygiene and First Aid were covered in the same one and a half hour lesson, while Dental Hygiene was conducted in a separate lesson. In total, each class was given two 90-minute sessions. Our lessons were conducted with the help of our three translators, Pholla, Sokhonn, and Khema, who translated all our lessons into Khmer.
The sessions were tailored for the different age groups of children, and various teaching methods were used to bring across the intended health messages. In the first session, the Team came up with an interactive skit, followed by teaching the children the 4 step hand washing method). They were then taught what to do should they get a big and small cut using placards, and shown potentially dangerous situations to avoid.
In the second session, children were shown a skit, and following that, were shown the modified scrub technique recommended by the Singapore Health Promotion Board. The Team used tooth models and extra huge toothbrushes to demonstrate the technique to the class, before breaking up into smaller groups to allow each child to practice on the model itself. They were then given plague-disclosing toothpaste, a pink "cream" that was used to stain the areas with plague on the children's teeth a bright pink. Later, every student was given a toothbrush and some toothpaste to brush off the pink plague areas, facilitated by the NUS students.
6 months of planning, email discussions, meeting up, and work sessions culminated in a successful project that ran smoothly, exceeding our expectations. We would like to thank the wonderful donors for their generous toothbrush and toothpaste donations, and all others who helped in making Project Thom a great success!
